How to Steam Milk Like a Barista with Your Solis Espresso Machine

Whether you’re preparing a creamy cappuccino, a silky latte, or a rich hot chocolate, perfectly steamed milk is the secret to achieving café-quality drinks at home.

If you own a Solis Grind & Infuse Perfetta or Solis Barista Perfetta Plus, your espresso machine comes equipped with a professional steam wand designed to create smooth, velvety microfoam — ideal for every milk-based coffee.

Here’s how to do it step by step.

Before You Start: Safety First

During or directly after use, the steam wand becomes hot — always hold it by the rubber handle only.

Keep a clean, damp cloth nearby to wipe the wand immediately after steaming to prevent milk buildup.

Step-by-Step: Steaming Milk

1. Activate the Steam Function

Press the steam button (💨) to start heating.

The button will blink while heating and light up white when ready for use.

2. Prepare the Milk Jug

Fill your milk jug to a maximum of half full — milk expands as it steams.

You can use regular milk, oat milk, or other plant-based options, but note that different types produce slightly different foam textures.

3. Purge the Steam Wand

Before steaming, purge the wand for 1–2 seconds to remove any water residue or condensation.

This step helps create the perfect foam.

4. Start Steaming

Insert the tip of the steam wand just below the milk surface (a few millimetres).

Turn the steam knob counterclockwise to start steaming.

You should hear a gentle hissing sound — this means air is being incorporated to create foam.

5. Texture, Temperature & Pour

Keep the wand near the surface until you’ve created enough foam, then lower it slightly to continue heating the milk evenly.

When the jug becomes too hot to touch for more than 3 seconds, the milk has reached about 65°C — the ideal temperature for serving.

Turn the steam knob clockwise to stop steaming.

Remove the milk jug and gently swirl it to blend the foam and milk for a silky texture.

Pour the steamed milk into your espresso — you can create latte art if you wish, or simply enjoy the smooth blend.

6. Clean Up

Wipe the wand immediately with a damp cloth.

Purge briefly to remove any remaining milk residue.

Clean the milk jug with water or place it in the dishwasher after use.

Pro Tips for Perfect Milk

  • Always start with cold milk and a chilled jug — it gives you more time to texture properly.
  • For cappuccinos: keep the wand closer to the surface to create more foam.
  • For lattes: keep the wand slightly deeper for smoother, silkier milk.
  • Don’t overheat — milk above 70°C can lose sweetness and develop a burnt taste.

Use Steamed Milk Beyond Coffee

Your Solis steam wand isn’t just for milk — it’s also perfect for:

  • Heating chocolate milk
  • Warming other beverages like matcha or chai
  • Frothing milk for desserts or breakfast drinks
